Shasta: Ants, Baseball, and ATV's

We’re sitting in our campsite with day one of our summer vacation under our belt! As we type this blog we’re listening to screaming children, a blaring baseball game on someone’s radio, a diesel engine running, and ants are crawling up our legs. YOU’VE GOT TO LOVE CAMPING!

For Janet, the drive up through the Lake Shasta area brought tears to her eyes as she remembered so many good times with her family camping and waterskiing on the lake. There’s nothing quite like those wonderful old memories of youth where you steal beer from your older brother and drink so much you throw up. All kidding aside, we both had so many good memories and are really thankful our parents took us to the lake.
We pulled into the campground about 6pm and even without a reservation were able to get a site. The young woman at the front assured us that she would set us up with one of the “best available” spots. Sure enough, we pulled in to number 72 convinced that she had given us a prime location. We set up camp in quick time, and proceeded to relax with a Sierra Nevada and a handful of nuts. Just as we were really settling in, feeling incredibly lucky to snag such an incredible spot, our new neighbor’s arrived: a family of 12 with the obligatory crying baby and G.I. Joe dad hooting and hollering as he rode his 4 wheel ATV around the campsite looking for just the right place to park it. It is 10:30 PM and G.I. Joe just fired it up again to drive 45 feet over to the restroom. Looks like he’s planning to take each kid on a separate trip! Oh Joy…varoom, varoom…4 kids down and 6 to go.

After a dinner of chips, salsa, and beer we went on a bike ride and took sunset pictures of Mount Shasta. Tomorrow we plan to get up really early and head for Castle Lake to get some sunrise photos. Since we are camping next to the loud family, getting up early shouldn’t be a problem. So long for now, we plan to be in Bend Oregon tomorrow.
